I don't much care for leading. Except by example, maybe

Posted: March 7th, 2009 @ 5:57pm

Having had the need to update my CV lately, I also took the opportunity to rewrite my bio blurb. Right after tinkering on that blurb came a request for the blurb, so the timing was perfect. I have no idea if the blurb is or is not, but the ability to deliver it when asked was nice. Looking at my CV and my blurb (after all the other blurbs and CV's of other professionals in my "field") was interesting. I am used to tailoring my resumé for particular applications, but I needed to update the thing in general now that I am moving more into contractor territory. I think my blurb is a bit wordy, but it is accurate. And once I realized that the blurb was accurate, I ceased tinkering with it and stepped back. What I noticed is that I am not prone to leading. Not overtly, at any rate. I like to be in a position of doing things, so I don't mind people asking me to get something done. I don't mind people telling me to get them done either, depending on the circumstances. I am not saying that I am not able to lead or direct, but I am saying that I prefer not too. I like consensus/collaborative decision making too much, and actively seek out opportunities in which the insane hierarchy of past job experiences is muted or disappeared. Because, in my experience, most managers or leaders are there by default or medication or relation. And they have rarely inspired or done a great job. And it is usually their secretary that did the majority work that had the leader's name on it. Other executive admin staff can attest to this phenomena. As a side note, I also was asked for a casual headshot. Thanks to Ceres and to my neighbor, I also had an okay picture to accompany the blurb. It may not speak much to my professional standing that my 4 year old took my picture, but at least the price was right and my mug aint too blurry!
